Southern Indiana native Larry Bird urges Pacers fans to remain patient

Springs Valley native Larry Bird advises Pacers fans to be patient and remain hopeful for the organization's future. According to an article written by Cliff Brunt, AP Sports writer:

"INDIANAPOLIS — Pacers president Larry Bird is urging fans to remain patient through the team’s struggles.

Indiana enters the All-Star break with an 18-34 record, well out of the playoff race after missing the postseason for the past three seasons. Last month, some players were openly wondering if their “weak-minded” defense could be righted and attendance woes have been a problem now for years, along with assorted off-the-court issues.

Yet Bird says the rebuilding phase that began when the Pacers traded Ron Artest in 2006 is on target, and will move into high gear after next season when the team gets salary cap space.

“We knew that we had to clean it out and rebuild it, and we knew we were going to go through some tough times,” Bird told The Associated Press this week. “Nobody likes to lose, and everybody wants to be a part of a winner. We think we’re on the right track to get there.”

Bird also took the pressure off coach Jim O’Brien, who is in his third year after back-to-back 36-46 seasons. O’Brien signed a one-year extension last September to coach through the end of next season, and Bird said he is in no danger of being replaced.

“The one thing Jimmy bought into when he came here was that we were going to rebuild, and we were going to struggle at times,” Bird said. “I always say the losses are on me because I want him to work these guys hard, develop the young guys we have and keep moving forward with what we have.”

The Pacers have suffered through a series of injuries. Top scorer Danny Granger missed a month with a heel injury, center Jeff Foster is out for the season with a back injury, guard/forward Mike Dunleavy...

Area News: Bird settles French Lick lawsuit

Larry BirdBird settles French Lick lawsuit
Indianapolis Business Journal - Indianapolis,IN,USA
Norm Heikens -  nheikens@ibj.com

Larry Bird has settled a lawsuit against a bed-and-breakfast that operates from his boyhood home in the southern Indiana town of French Lick.

Attorneys for the basketball icon and Legend of French Lick LLC would not discuss the settlement, saying the parties had signed a confidentiality agreement.

The Web site of Legend of French Lick Resort carries a disclaimer saying the resort is “not affiliated with, or endorsed or sponsored by Larry Bird or the Larry Joe Bird Revocable Living Trust.” It was not immediately clear whether the disclaimer was used prior to the settlement, which was closed yesterday.

The suit was filed May 2 in the New Albany division of U.S. District Court, Southern District of Indiana.

Bird, president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers and a former NBA star, has registered his name as a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Bird sold the house to Georgianna Lincoln and Christopher Cooke in the summer of 2007. Then, the suit claimed, the couple marketed the site as Legend of French Lick, the Former Home of Larry Bird Resort.

Bird was represented by Ice Miller LLP in Indianapolis. Lincoln and Cooke were represented by McNeely Stephenson Thopy & Harrold in Shelbyville.

Area News: Larry Bird files suit alleging trademark infringement

Larry BirdLarry Bird suit filed
Henderson Gleaner - Henderson,KY,USA
By Kate Braser

Basketball legend Larry Bird's former home in West Baden, Ind., is now the subject of a federal lawsuit alleging trademark infringement.

The civil suit filed on behalf of the NBA Hall of Famer in U.S. District Court in Evansville on Monday alleges the new owners are using Bird's name and fame without his permission, and he seeks to stop them from doing so.

The 12-acre property, at 7328 W. County Road 100 N., now is named Legend of French Lick Resort. The resort's Web site touts it as "the former home of Larry Bird" and entices visitors to play basketball on the court where Bird "spent hours practicing and perfecting his shot when at home in French Lick."

Geogianna Lincoln and Christopher Cooke bought the property last year from the Larry Joe Bird Revocable Living Trust.

According to the 11-page federal complaint, during the negotiations Lincoln and Cooke's representatives reportedly attempted to buy items of memorabilia from Bird and asked to use Bird's name to identify the house, but those requests were denied.

The complaint states Bird and his representatives did not know Lincoln and Cooke planned to market the property as a bed and breakfast using Bird's name and "commercially promoting the house as 'Legend of French Lick, The Former Home of Larry Bird Resort.'"

"The commercialization of Larry Bird's name in association with this former property is wholly and completely unauthorized and is blatantly being done for the sole purpose of profiting illegally from Larry Bird's name," the complaint states. "Defendant has even tried to create news stories about the property and about this dispute in a transparent effort to create publicity from the use of Larry Bird's name."

Reached by phone late Monday, Cooke said he was disappointed to learn the ...
